Fire extinguishers work by eliminating contributing elements from the fire triangle.

A CO2 fire extinguisher is distinguished by a black strip that runs around the top of the cylinder. This variety of extinguisher works by eliminating two fire triangle elements, heat and oxygen. They are suitable for use on two types of fires, flammable liquids and electrically charged equipment.

CO2 fire extinguishers are created by storing a mixture of liquid and carbon dioxide under pressure. When stored like this, the mixture remains a liquid form. When discharged, the mixture  expands rapidly. It is propelled at high speed as a cold white jet onto the flame. The CO2 works to smother the fire, greatly reducing the oxygen from the source. The cold nature of the matter brings down the temperature of the fire, eliminating the heat element.

The potential downfall of these extinguishers is that the displacement of oxygen from a fire may not be permanent enough to stop the flame re-igniting. This is why they are only suitable for smaller contained flames. The upside with these extinguishers is that they are good for use in the home and office workplace as they do not leave any chemical residue as you get with a dry chemical extinguisher.
