Nonverbal communication can have marked influence on situations in the security industry. During your security officer training, you will learn extensively about how to use appropriate body language according to your situation.

The body language you use as a security officer can support your function as a protective or helpful role. It can also present as a threatening front that could agitate people in stressful situations. The following are methods of body language you should try to avoid:

  • Arms across chest – defensive stance
  • Clenching fists – Agitation, frustration or aggression
  • Shrugging shoulders – Indifference, you cannot relate to them or do not care
  • Finger pointing – Aggressive and accusatory
  • Rubbing face or neck – Annoyance, frustration and dislike

Think of the gestures you might use when you are in frustrating situations and try to analyse the meanings people derive from them.

This next list identifies body language that lends itself to positive outcomes.

  • Arms held behind body with hands clasped – Authoritative and alert
  • Head upright, not raised high – Alertness without arrogance
  • Direct eye contact – Honest and attentive. Use this when listening as well as speaking to people
  • Hands on hips with legs at shoulder width apart – Alert and ready to act
  • Gentle nodding of the head – Shows consideration of a situation when a person is upset. Shows you understand them.
