As an Emergency Services Officer or Security Officer, your place of work may be subject to emergency drills or emergency evacuations in some circumstances. In any workplace, you need to be aware of all evacuation and assembly area procedures should evacuations occur. It is also paramount that you are aware of the emergency structures in buildings.

An Emergency Service Officers attending a situation in a building will need to be aware of the following potential existing emergency structures. Security officers working in these buildings will be expected to know about the existing structures in order to assist people being evacuated, but also to advise attending Emergency Service Officers attending the situation.

Emergency Exits

These exits will always be lit up so as to provide clear direction to open spaces from all areas of the building.

Emergency Lighting

Emergency lighting will activate should the main power to the building fail. It will remain activated for approximately 2 hours.

Fire Protection Equipment

It is crucial that all fire exits remain unobstructed at all times. Automatic fire detection and alarm systems, smoke and thermal detectors are positioned appropriately throughout buildings.

Air Conditioning

Built in air conditioning systems will be shut off automatically when fire systems and alarms are triggered. However units not linked to the main system, such as stand alone, will not. Make yourself aware of the systems used throughout your building of work.
