Monitoring perimeters to prevent the unauthorised boarding of ships is an important element of maritime security. The environment presents greater challenges to both the security of the property and those wishing to gain unauthorised access. Threats of underwater terrorist attacks are a concern to the maritime industry and port law enforcement agencies. Ports face threats from boat-delivered ordnance such as limpet mines and other forms of improvised underwater explosives. There are several submersible detection systems that have been developed to increase the underwater monitoring abilities of maritime security during port transitions. These systems eliminate the need to place any personnel at risk in order to evaluate the underwater environment.

Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV)

Using this quick and highly accurate method, maritime security can produce quick security sweeps of the hull. These remote operated underwater vehicles use video rays to conduct inspections. They are tethered to the ship and operated by trained personnel aboard the ship.

Diver Detection Sonar

Officially named Sea Guardian, this detection technology can be utilised as a standalone system or integrated within larger multi-sensor surveillance systems. They are sonar and acoustic systems used to detect approaching divers and underwater vehicles, even in high noise environments. The incredible development of these technologies means that the system is able to distinguish a diver from a marine animal, such as a sea lion or dolphin. It does so by detecting the amount of oxygen in the life form’s lungs.
