A qualified paramedic or First Aid officer will understand the necessity to read a person’s blood pressure if they are in certain situations. You will have no doubt experienced a Sphygmomanometer at your doctor’s office. This blood pressure reading tool works by restricting the flow to your arm and generating a reading on the connected dial. The tool takes two readings, one at it’s peak during the cardiac cycle known as the Systolic pressure, and one at resting rate, known as the Diastolic pressure.

Taking yourself or your entire team; security guards, emergency response team, sports coaches, teachers, office staff, students; through a First Aid course will lead to markedly increased management of situations. During a First Aid course, you will be taught how to take a blood pressure reading. But what does this reading actually tell us?

If a person has low blood pressure, hypo-tension it can be indicative of (but not limited to) the following in emergency situations:

  • Exhaustion
  • Exposure to extreme heat or sunstroke
  • Dehydration
  • Emotional distress
  • Presence of severe pain
  • Being in a state of shock

High blood pressure, or hyper-tension, can be indicative of (but not limited to) the following in emergency situations:

  • Stroke
  • Anxiety, fear or stress
  • Interaction between medications or drugs
  • Kidney trauma

During a certified First Aid course, like the one offered by Diamond Protection’s qualified trainers, you will learn how to recognise crucial signs that point towards either high or low blood pressure, and how to best respond in an emergency situation. Knowing the difference and how to proceed could be the key to saving someone’s life.
